Monday Hit List

Sunday, 20 July 2008

The Monday Hit list rolls on this week with a surprise visitor to Wrontgtown.

  1. Simon Gerrans - the Mansfield local had a brilliant Stage 15 of the Tour, running away with an impressive stage win. Training partner of Luke Bell in the summer, Luke was telling us recently how 'Gerro' made him look like a club cyclist when the two took to the roads for a training ride. Well, you shouldn't feel too bad Luke. When you see the time that Gerrans had in the break on Stage 15, he made a lot of the world's top cyclists look a little slow. A great effort by Simon too in the finale when he outsprinted the rest for a memorable stage win.
  2. Ivan Rana - watching him running at the latest ITU race in Austria was a good reminder of how fast the race in Beijing will be. The recent bout of 'Gomezmania' has left little room for the likes of Rana, who won a world title back in '02. Here's the tip ... don't write off anyone!
  3. Team CSC Saxo Bank - This team performed quite the number on Cadel Evans during the first Alpine stage, dishing out a beating to the Yellow Jersey to show their muscle.  And it paid off as they set about toppling Evans' lead. When you look at their line up, they're all class and no doubt were rubbing their hands together with anticipation to get climbing again. Now they have the weight of the Yellow to defend.
  4. Francisco Pontano - Winner of Ironman Lake Placid and one of the few guys in the world who can go with Bjorn Andersson on the bike. A great effort to hang in there in very average race condidtions.
  5. Cadel Evans - with no team and everyone wanting to take a shot at our man, Cadel fought on well to remain in the hunt for this year's Tour de France. His team needs a stinging half time address if they want to help him keep his overall high placing.  And with 2 brutal mountain stages to come, it's not going to get any easier for Cadel.

Wrongtown of the week

firstoffthebike.com and Mitch Anderson - we're not too big to admit we were wrong, or in this case, so very wrong! Last week we put Riccardo Ricco as our number one on our weekly Hit List. To be honest, we had heard whispers about the man's habits but as we've said before, you have to believe until proven otherwise. To make matters worse though, Mitch Anderson also weighed in to hail Ricco as the best athlete in the world! So we thought we'd send both parties to Wrongtown for jumping the gun.  Well, you live and learn!

I am done like a dinner on that one Philthy!!! You're a dog for pinning that on me too! I was actually being a sarcastic so-n-so for those who read your weekly blog, after a big call by Phil two weeks ago. But I'll take the rap...on the other hand I was probably close to the mark, he was one of the best (synthetic) athletes in the world!

Interesting to note in this weeks ironaman lake placid that there were several successfull attempts at doing two ironman races in a row. May not have one them but two podiums in two weeks is pretty good. Cant believe Macca got all the coverage for his attempt yet others get nothing. and they succeeded, in racing ironaman to their best potential two weeks in a row.
