Geelong 70.3 - 2010 Who's hot and Who's not
Geelong 70.3 turned it on today. There was the usual raft of great performances but there were also those who didn't fire.
Hot
- Clayton Fettell - He took the race by the scruff of the neck and gave it a good shake. Out alone and with a posse of pursuers after him Fettell was stoic throughout the day. Yes the move didn't work in the end but he won some fans with a brave attempt.
- Craig Alexander - Crowie was his usual self. The thing that made this race so special was that it would have been easy for him to pack it in and run into a podium spot. But not Alexander. He takes the role of being World Champion seriously and with that comes the responsibility to race hard every race. A 1.11 run says it all.
- Tim Berkel - Showing growing race mojo Berkel kept his head when the bolters went early on the run. Berkel calmly surveyed the situation and kept pace. A podium finish behind two of the best was a good effort to right the ship after his Ironman WA race. We called him Hot and Cold pre race but he was definitely on today.
- Caroline Steffen - She was in a class of her own today. Steffen monstered the bike and was clear by minutes on the run restoring some Team TBB pride.
Who's not
- Jason Shortis - 'Shorto' is an Ironman legend in Australia and royalty at Ironman Australia. His race today however was below what he had talked about pre race. Still, he has another attempt at winning his favorite event in a few weeks (IMA) so he may just turn that form around to a distance that suits him. It is hard to write him out of anything.
- Ali Fitch - Fitch has a history of being consistent but was off the mark today.
- Sam Warriner - It's hard to say that coming fourth in a race is not Hot but when you are the defending champion this may the case. Warriner is a superb athlete and had one of those day.
- Drafters - They were littered all the way through the course. Not a good look.

by Mike, 08 February 2010There were two major pelotons of about 20+ riders on the course - its was quite amazing to see that level of drafting.
