The best of Aussie talent

At the risk of sounding like a line out of Top Gun, who is the best of the best? We kicked the idea around for a couple of weeks before we finally came to our list after some heated debate. But one list is never definitive. We are sure there will be plenty of people out there who think we might not have got it right. But we would love to hear from you and for you tell us who you think deserves to be on our top ten list of the best triathletes Australia has produced.

Courtney Atkinson is Australian. He beat most of these guys on your list. He won Australian titles. How can he not make the top 10. He won the F1 series, World Cup races, and is now going to win the Olympics.

Chris,

It is Ironic that you posted today as I was discussing this point at our coffee break yesterday after our Sunday ride.

we were actually discussing Loretta and I agree with you. We do forget easily and she must move further up our list. I sat in Brisbane and watched her and Macca destroy the best in the business at the Goodwill Games. She was special and I think we do look a lot at other races. Loretta should move up the list for sure. We revised our list and it is final now and we are happy to submit ths for grading by the teachers. Happy to have it looked at and will give reasons behind our rankings if people need them.

1: Chris McCormack - Without argument - top 5 on the all time list of our sport
2: Michellie Jones - Also sits comfortably here. Also sits in the all time list very high

I have left a space here as these two athletes sit well above the rest

3. emma Snowsill - She is young and will fill in this void between her and Macca and Michellie. Could go on to be our greatest. She is special, but a fragile body might cut her career short. Time will show us, but right now, she is amazing. Olympic Gold is on the horizon in a couple of weeks and the battle against fernandez will be a bueaty. she is a tough tiger our emma and I wish her all the best.

4: Peter Robertson - people give him a hard time but as one poster said here, they dont give out World titles in Cornflake boxes and Robbo has 3 of them. 2 silvers, 2 Olympics. 5 world cup wins

5: Greg Welch - Our first triathlon super star. Won Hawaii and ITU Worlds and many other events. He actually won a duathlon World title back when duathlon meant something. Never dominated however and was similar to a Greg Bennett but with a couple of World titles. He was consistent Welchy and first to break into the American stranglehold on the sport in a big way which gave him his persona.

6: Loretta Harrop - We neglected Lorretta and her, Robbo and Welchy sit very close together. She was a super star and won everything. I think where you leave Loretta out of the equaion is because her domionation was only for 5 years(6 seasons) before she called it a day and she was plagued by injuries. When she raced she won, and we agree that she is one of our best ever. An absolutely amazing athlete who gave 100 percent every time. She could almost take the spot from Robbo had she won the Olympics this is how close it is here. She was only 2 seconds from the gold. Thse 3 are very hard to split. Loretta was bloody good with probably the best swim bike combination for a woman we have ever seen.

7 Emma Carney - World titles, National titles, ITU World Cup domination.

8. Brad Beven - 13 ITU World Cup victories, 6 National titles, International race wins, ITU Indoor World Triathlon champion. The F1 King.

9: Miles Stewart - ITU, National titles, World Champion, F1
10. Craig Walton - The man is good. ITU circuit, Non Drafting, even Ironman results and half Ironman results. 5 Noosa titles, an ITU World Championships medal, olympic Games.

Alexander - misses out. Crowie is still racing and will move into this list I am sure, but he is a late bloomer. He was never good enough to be included on the Australian teams and his world cup results were average. He never had the leg speed for the fast ITU racing on the run. He was better non drafting but again played 2nd to Macca and Walton in the USA for many years. Macca move to Ironman in 2002 freed things up a little in the USA for many of these guys, but again Macca continued to win ahead of both Crowie and Walton until his focus shifted totally after failure in 2004 in Kona. Crowie I think is one of our best Half Ironman guys but his ITU performances move him down the list. Crowie is a star and it hurts me to keep him off the list, but results dont lie and he just lacks in the deep ITU field and lost the big head to head battles against Walton, Macca, and Robertson.

Others worth noting who are close but off the list:

Stephen Foster, Greg Benett, Mark Dragon, Brad Kadefelt, Courtney Atkinson, Greg Stewart, Spot Anderson, Jason Shortis, Jo King, Nikki Hackett,

This is the reason we sit these two so high. Domination over any distance, any format, any weather condition, and any athlete. They won races off the front on the bike, from within the group in an ITU World cup, they won with fastest run splits. The can do anything from anywhere in a group. Tactically two of the best triathletes the world has ever seen. Their ability to change and evolve as racers makes them great.

Sorry for the long post but we had to change our list and I am glad Chris posted. Loretta gets a double thumbs up and an apolgy from the hornets riding up here in Brissie. We wont forget lorretta again.

Stephen.

Rossi,

The list claims for the best "Australian Triathletes" of all time. Your list is full of people who could have made it or had potential "but". History is marked in ink through results and these dont change over time. Nobody remembers the "what ifs" or the "almosts". Whenever you here a story about these people it always has the word "BUT" after their name. The champions never have this.

I am sure these athletes were good, but the 10 on this list had that extra bit that made them great.

I was a swimmer through school and raced Kieran Perkins in the 1987 Australian 400 metre schoolboy final. He just touched me out for 2nd place by .7 of a second. I work as a graphic designer and he went on to be one of Australias best ever swimmers. I could say I have the talent or could have done it, but the truth is I didnt have "what it takes" to go onto that next level and become a champion. I never complain about it or care really but I do get frustrated at the people who claim what they could have been when they never did. To be a champion takes more than just athletic ability. They all have something else that is hard to measure and is often neglected but is what seperates the winners from the rest.

Your list Rossi is full of these people. I am sure they were good domestic athletes (Clayton Stevenson I do know as I raced him through the surf club. He was a good board paddler and went onto ride bikes at the Olympics) but to win Internationally year after year and in the biggest arenas takes a special mindset and person.

My list without really knowing the depth of this sport too much would be

Macca
Michellie
Snowsill
Welchy
Robertson
Lorretta
Emma Carney
Brad Beven
Craig Walton

In response to the post by Stephen, How can Miles Stewart and Brad Beven be ahead of Loretta Harrop? Lorretta Harrop should move right p the list in everyones rankings and even ahead of Emma Carney.

I am not disputing that Macca and Michellie sit near the top, but Harrop won 2 Goodwill Games Gold (harder than the World Championships to win as only the top 50 from the world are invited) an Olympic Silver medal and a 5th place finish, a World Championships, multiple Australian titles and World Cup victoires. Wow, we forget so easily. I rank her number 3 on the list with Snowsills performace at this years Olympic Games possibly moving her out of the number 3 slot. Right now Harrop is that far up the list.

She is light years above Alexander, Beven, Stewart, Welch and the others. Think about it.

Macca
Jones
Snowsill
Robertson
Welch
Carney
Stewart
Bevan
Walton
Alexander

Thats your list as i see it and I have had this exact discussion many times with friends. We have been racing triathlon since 1988 so we have been around a long time.

I will tell you Why?

Macca and Jones have won everything and at any distance, format, or race condition. Draft legal, non drafting, long short, hilly, flat. Off the front, from the group. They can do anything and sit comfortably at the top of this list. They should almost share the top spot as our king and queen.

Snowsill over Robertson - both hold 3 world titles. Snowsill will go on to move right up this list. We will see if the transition to Ironman can be done. Can her body handle the extra volume. She gets sick a lot now and injured. Whether the body can handle the move up in distance only time will show. She has the ability without question. She has won everything else. Robbo has three world titles and world cup wins. His poor performances in non drafting races hurts him and also his attempts at half ironman have hurt him also. This being said, ITU World cup circuit is super competitive and he has proved himself more than most here in its biggest race. 2 x Olympian, 2 Commonwealth Games Teams and F1 race wins are pretty impressive

Welch sits here, and many will argue he should sit about Robbo. Welch won Hawaii and ITU Worlds in 1990, but this was the year it was boycotted by the strong Americans in Allen, Molina and Pigg. It was also the year that Miles was controversially left off the Team (or sent home) when he was dominating in the USA. He raced Welch 7 times in 1990 and won all 7 but was then sent home 2 weeks prior to worlds. Welch won Hawaii which is his crowning moment and showed the talent he had but his actual list of deep race wins is relatively small. Many say he never reached his full potential and had more to give than he actually did, but now we can only look at his results to make judgment. He was a huge character in the sport and this personalisty over rode a lot of his achievements. No denying he was great, but I think robbo pips him here. He was a similar racer to robbo in that sense where he either won or was off the pace. The consistency was not as high as the athletes that sit above him.

Carney above Bevan and Stewart just because of ITu World Cup domination. Miles and Brad were two of the best competitors we have ever had but just lack the internnational race wins that the other have. They deserve their spot here on the list as they won some big majors and super competitive athletes globally.

Walton over Alexander even though Walton does not hold a world title. Waltons career length, his non drafting race wins and his ability to win world cups puts him above Alexander. Alexanders best ever World Cup result was a 5th. He did not have the short course speed of the athletes above in this format of racing. The non drafting events Alexander was more competitive but still often played second fiddle to Macca and Walton in the USA for many years. His win at 70.3 worlds was fantastic but the timing of this race leaves many of the good guys off the start list. Stadler, Macca, Sindballe, Faris and many others claim they would race thgis event if it was in July but 3 weeks after kona does not work. Crowie is a late bloomer but his performances late in his career might mjove him up the list a little before he retires but his lack of ITU performances hurts him. i want to say that Lorretta Harrop sits very close to these 2 athletes and could push either one of them out in any argument.

Honourable mentions:
Jackie Gallagher, Loretta Harrop, Joe King, Chris Hill, Greg Bennett, Stephen Forster, Jason Shortis, Greg Stewart, Mark Dragon, Spot Anderson, Tim Bentley, Simon Knowles, Ben Bright, Lach Vollmerhouse, Bruce Thomas, Troy Fidler, Nicki Hackett,

Macca is by far the best triathlete we have ever had. There is no argument. His win at Hawaii seals it. He just won Ironman Europe last weekend for his 11th Ironman win from 16 starts. He now has more Ironman wins than any other male triathlete. He won 7 World Cups, Goodwill Games, 9 National titles at all distances in Australia. 7 World championship teams, 3 years undefeated in the USA, ITU World cup series, - it is just amazing. For those that say Welch is above him, you have got to be kidding yourself. He has won every major title in our sport and every major race in the World. The argument now is how far up the list of the greatest triathletes in history he sits. It is very close to the top of this list.

Michellie Jones is a very close second and is by far our best ever girl. Snowsill might surpass her, but right now Jones sits above Snowsill and is really close to Macca.

I agree with Alexander being the 10th ranked guy. He has proved himself these last 4 years.

Robbo deserves his place close to the top. Again they dont hand out world titles in corn flake boxes.

Great list. Macca definately the top of the tree. Welch should swap with Jones, and I think Michellie Jones should be number 2 actually. Alexander over Jason Shortis for the 10th spot. Shortis was a great domestic athlete but Alexander has proved himself internationaly and has a world title and a 2nd place finish. He was not fast enough on the ITU World Cup circuit which puts him further down the list than a Miles and Brad Bevan but he needs to be on this list. Robbo is definately on the list. 3 World titles, World Cup wins and F1 race wins were solid. Olympic Games qualifications and Commonwealth Games medals. He is right up near the top of the list. No argument.
Great discussion point.

Great work all our comment makers! When you look at Robbo take a look at who he raced and the circumstances. Merely saying he only won three races is a bit tough.. thanks for your responses!

Can't believe that people are having a go at Robbo being included on the list. The man won three world titles and 2 silver medals, as well as a medal at Commonwealth Games. The others may have won many races around the world but to beat the best athletes in this style of racing on a day when everyone is gunning for a win puts him up there in my books. How many times did the other athletes try to do this and come up short. Its hard to win one world crown let alone 3 and a bunch of other medals. I watched him break away at Queenstown worlds on a hilly course and run away with the win Beav guess you missed that one!

reckon many would say that despite Robo's 3 world champs, he doesn't deserve to be on the list at all. way to inconsistent for my likeing. yes he has won 3, i say again 3,big races but has crashed and burned in many more,,first or last for Robbo, which appears to have worked 3 times. plus he hasn't raced and won anything long. the true champs are a factor every race start and over many distances. It would be a complete waste of time for Robbo to enter anything non drafting or with a decent bike course in it.
Waldo and Macca have proved many times that these itu guys can't ride.Waldo once rode away from a drafting pack in his run shoes as he forgot his bike shoes..embarrasing.

You have to think about the amount of big races that this list have won. Sure the names like Pringle and Alexander, Knoweles were good athletes but multiple world champions are hard to ignore

Have not people forgotten about Greg Stewart and Paul Righby?

Back in the 1980s, they were the athletes who put triathlon on the map back in the 1980s. They both completed the Ironman in Hawaii and Japan.

In conclusion, over the course of 20 years, we have had a number of great male and female triathletes who have raised the performance levels of current and future elite athletes.

Something to think about!!

Macca is good; but he hasn't won more DIFFERENT world championships than any other triathlete (including Mark Allen) - Welchy is KING...

And where are the ancient ones? The best Aussie talent should at least recognise the Mark Pringles and Marc Dragans, the Louise Bonhams, back in the day of our first 'professionals' who actually laid the ground work and put down the results before there were ANY world championships outside of the Hawaiian Ironman!

Any list missing Crowie is probably wrong and his winning the Ironman World Champs 70.3 stamps his authority though in fact he's still a rising star!

Your list is good. But, what a joke it is to have Peter Robertson ahead of any of the names behind him. Especially Michellie Jones and Jason Shortis. And, then not including Alexander. All three of them are ten times the athlete Robbo ever was.
...
written by Tom , July 11, 2008
Great list! Macca easily over Welchy, Crowie is a great athlete but not in the calibre of the others until he wins at Hawaii or a few worl champ titles at any distance
...
written by Tissa , July 11, 2008
Welchy over Macca? No way!

And yeah, where the hell is Craig Alexander?

I would have put Walto higher up there too. I know he didn't do as well once everything was draft legal, but in non-drafting (a TRUE test of the athlete???) he was untouchable.

Isn't Craig Alexander an aussie?

Your list is good.. I would have had Welchy and Macca swapped around. Welchy was a bigger name than McCormack.
