Aussie wins showdown in Texas

Men's Event

We couldn't be more pleased with this result. Having spoken to Leon Griffin a number of times and after his last great effort in Kansas and he was always confident of doing well in Texas. The race unfolded with Scott O'Donnell setting the early pace with Paul Matthew. Griffin, with some time to make up on the bike didn't panic and rode well to keep in touch. Pre race favorite Paul Amey was not having the greatest day and by the run leg he was out of contention and out of the race. The battle raged on with Griffin calmly leaving T2 with only one man in front of him and that was short lived as he cruised to his first 70.3 victory in the U.S. Paul Matthew must be wondering what might have been with a 2.20 on the bike and then the fastest run split on the day by minutes. His bike was six minutes slower ending his race there. But the real story of the day is the emergence of Leon Griffin. He has been promising to deliver for a few seasons now and after what could be considered his best ever Australian season with a National Championship and a win in 70.3 Geelong he has finally delivered on the tough U.S circuit.

  1. Leon Griffin 3.58.35
  2. Tim ODonnell 4.00.09
  3. Paul Matthews 4.02.08

Women's Event

In 70.3 racing right now there is only one name to be truly fearful of if you are a female professional. And that name ids Mirinda Carfrae. The current World Champion has time and time again proven her worth and must be scaring every pro out there. Buffalo Springs was the setting for another demolition of some of the best women's professionals getting around. Joanna Zeiger was the one to catch with a two minute lead out of the water and a pedigree that said if you don't ride fast I'm gone. Carfrae reeled her in by the end of the bike with Joanna Lawn in tow. The three pre race favorites were doing justice to their billing. But in 70.3 racing no one runs as fast as Carfrae. This was the case again as she cruised away and put three minutes into Zeiger who took second and five into Lawn who was third.

  1. Mirinda Carfrae 4.23.28
  2. Joanna Zeiger 4.27.29
  3. Joanna Lawn 4.28.23

Check out our preview as we got it so right in the women's (for once!). We also wanted to give a shout out to Clint Van Beveren who made the podium in the 30-34 age group at Buffalo Springs. Way to go Clint! If you or anyone you know is racing around the world let us know! feedback@firstoffthebike.com
