Florida 70.3 an all England affair

Sunday, 18 May 2008 21:34

We talked up a huge race this weekend in Florida and there certainly was a ripping battle out there. But the win we'd anticipated for Craig Alexander just didn't eventuate.  While Paul Amey too out the race in a terrific effort, one of the big stories lurking underneath is why 'Crowie' pulled the pin at the end of the bike. Theories have come in from a few sources so far, but the definitive answer is still out there.  Not that it stops us from speculating at the cafe.  If you have a theory, you can let us know via This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. But back to the racing where Paul Amey, former dual World Duathlon champion made the race his on the bike, putting almost two minutes into the rest of the field.  Earlier in the swim, it was no surprise to see Bryan Rhodes come out of the water in the lead, though later in the race he was to fade to sixth. Amey must have been supremely confident on the run, clocking the fastest run split of the day to gap the rest of the field by over 3 minutes and setting up one of his better victories.

The women's event was a much closer contest than the men's with an early lead being set up by Dede Greisbauer after leading out of the water and through the bike leg.  But having only around 30 seconds lead on the likes of Leanda Cave and Nina Kraft is not going to be enough and this proved to be the case.  It wasn't long before Greisbauer's lead was history and Kraft and Cave were setting up a run that would see them well ahead of the main field.  In the end it was Cave who prevailed to make it a Brit double act.   Lisa Bentley still showed the 'Bentley Blast' was around by running herself into 4th spot.

Elite Men

  1. Paul Amey
  2. Santiago Ascenco
  3. Spencer Smith

Elite Women

  1. Leanda Cave
  2. Nina Kraft
  3. Dede Greisbauer

The fearless predictions went a little hay wire with a few of our named pros not showing and of course our number one pick in Craig Alexander pulling the pin post bike. Still, we'll keep putting it on the line and predicting the form!
