Observations from the Tour de Suisse

Wednesday, 25 June 2008

The Tour de Suisse like the Dauphine Libere is one of the key lead up races to the Tour de France. We have been going on about how important a good preparation is and, like the famed Dauphine with its' climbs and hard racing the Tour de Suisse is also full of that. This race acts as both a form finder and a last chance for riders to convince their teams to take them on the lap of France. Like every Pro Tour race the racing is full gas from the gun and we took a look at the Tour de Suisse to see what could be taken from the last big pre Tour event.

  1. Welcome back Robbie - Robbie McEwen, who went winless in the Tour of Italy is back in town after a couple of good stage win. You can be almost guaranteed that if it is wet or technical he will be one to watch. Confidence is everything for sprinters and Robbie's must be well up there post race.
  2. Frank Schleck is made of rubber - You would've seen the crash. It was where the road went right and Schleck went straight!! What's more amazing is that Schleck got up and was injury free. Makes you wonder about human body when this sort of thing happens.
  3. Team High Road are back - We bagged them about their boring jerseys but Team High Road are winning more often than not these days. They got another win and the Yellow leaders jersey after Stage 6. They will do something at the Tour de France.
  4. Fabian Cancellara is a rock star - from time trialling to solo attacks like he did on Stage 7 of the Tour de Suisse Cancellara is just awesome with the sheer force of his wins. Frightening.
  5. The winner of the Tour de Suisse will not not have an impact come July - Hey we respect the awesome ride by Roman krueziger but if he makes the squad for July it might be as a water carrier. His ride during the week was great but there are to many hitters in his Liquigas team for him.
Stay tuned to firstoffthebike.com as we follow the Tour de France over the month of July. We have plenty of great things happening as well as tracking the world of tri!
