Quelle Challenge Roth questions answered

Sunday, 13 July 2008

The big question this weekend was whether Chris McCormack could win two Ironman distance events in two weeks. The answer to that has been swirling around the triathlon world since the announcement was made earlier this year that the double was what Macca was after. The sensible person said it was not going to happen. The cynical person said that MCCormack was there (in Roth) only to collect the appearance money and not finish and then there was the romantic sporting person who could think it was don. There were some in this office who fell into all three categories.

The answer was made pretty clear two thirds into the bike and that is Macca is human and that one human cannot win two Ironman distance races in two weekends. Patrick Vernay prevailed and won the Quelle Challenge Roth. His time was not the super quick times that we have seen in previous races but Vernay's career is going from strength to strength. The women's event was won by last year's winner in Yvonne Van Vlerken after the race was made by Belinda Granger who faded into fourth.

Men's Event

  1. Patrick Vernay 8:09
  2. Pete Jacobs 8:12
  3. Torbjorn Sindballe 8:15

Women's Event

  1. Yvonne Van Vlerken
  2. Erika Csomor
  3. Gina Ferguson
