firstoffthebike.com's Monday Hit List

Sunday, 11 May 2008 07:54

This week's Hit List has quite the international flavour ...

We've again scoured the world to conjure up the latest edition of our firstoffthebike.com Hit List. This week, the spotlight finds an eclectic mix for our top 5.

  1. Team Slipstream Chipotle - What a great effort to take the famed Maglia Rosa (pink leader's jersey) of the Giro d'Italia, particularly for a team that isn't even on the Pro Tour. They're well set up and motivated and smacked the big boys of the Pro Tour in their first Grand Tour team time trial.
  2. Vanessa Fernandes - The Portuguese flier made it five European championships in a row this weekend. Lookout Olympic world .. this girl is super quick and has her sights set on gold come August.
  3. Ben Kersten - Ben's had a tough week. The Olympic track cyclist was smashed by a motorist in a senseless road rage incident and, like a number of his bunch, came off second best. His efforts with the media following the incident were considered and forceful, though he was tested to the limit in a radio interview when the alleged motorist rang in ... sensational journalism at its worst.
  4. Grant Hackett - Let's say it once and for all. This guy will win gold in Beijing and if you think he is fat you're kidding yourself. That was one photo and a bad one at that. Anyone who can swim a sub 15 minute 1500m at the Olympic trials last month is ready to go.
  5. Samuel Hill - Hill dominated the World Cup downhill mountain bike series last year and is already on song for this season. Hey, it may not take thousands of road kilometres to get this good, but it definitely takes nerves of steel. Go get 'em Sammy!

Wrongtown of the week - The so called 'broken down' motorist who drove his car into a bunch of riders in Sydney last week. The bunch included Olympic hopefuls, past champions and regular Joes. This act is beyond comprehension.

Let us know how we got it? Did we miss someone or a great feat during the week? Do you have a nomination for next week's world famous Hit List?

I can't think why this motorist has not been charged yet... not good enough. We are on the road all the time and if he has another tantrum then the result could be lot worse. When are people going to wake up and see that it can be life threatening to drive in this manner?
